dragonball-kaiIn February 2009, Toei Animation announced that it would rebroadcast Dragonball Z as part of the series 20th anniversary celebrations. The new series, Dragonball Kai, premiered on April 5, 2009. The episodes were remastered for HDTv and featured an undated opening and closing sequences. The vocal tracks were rerecorded by most of the original cast. The footage was re-edited to follow the manga style. The new series moves faster and all of the damaged frames were removed. Dragonball Kai is considered a new series created from the original Dragonball Z footage. The new frames in Dragonball Kai were produced by digitally tracing over still frames and filling them in with softer colors. This reduced any damage to the original animation. Much of the original material from Dragonball Z will be left out reducing the episode count from 291 episodes in Dragonball Z to 100 episodes in Dragonball Kai.
